Successful entrepreneurs have a deep passion for what they do. They’re extremely goal-oriented about what they want to achieve, often doing whatever it takes to the exclusion of everything else.
While many are formally trained in the field they’ve targeted, the lack of formal training never stopped some of the most accomplished. In fact, many successful entrepreneurs hold no college degree whatsoever. Take Richard Branson, who dropped out of school at 16. Or Bill Gates, who was a college dropout. Or how about Rachael Ray, who never spent a day formally training in the culinary arts.
These are just some of the people who’ve become successful entrepreneurs not by following conventions, but by being passionate about what they set out to do. They have five key characteristics in common. If you adopt a similar mindset, you’ll stand a good chance of rising as high as these business flyers.
Become known as an expert. When seeking advice on specific matters, it’s natural to turn to an expert who can help in matters you have little experience in. So, the more widely known you become in your chosen niche, the more people will turn to you. Instead of having to seek out new business, people will seek you for your expertise – bringing a wealth of money-making opportunities with them.
Take what you do seriously. It’s important that what you do, you do with a passion. Take it seriously, as if your life or well-being depends on it. If you don’t, you won’t get far in your business. It’s easy to get sidetracked, so stay focused and motivated. Motivation is key to becoming a successful entrepreneur. Loving what they do and being determined to be known as the best are common traits among all successful entrepreneurs.
Grab attention. Marketing is the life-line of every successful business. However, marketing smartly is the real goal. Identify your USP – your Unique Selling Point – and present your goods or services in a distinctive, compelling way. Showcase your business only in places where LOTS of people who specifically seek what you’re selling spend time. That’s how successful entrepreneurs grab attention and keep their businesses on top.
Follow up constantly. Constant contact with customers and prospects should be the mantra of every business owner. Staying connected enables you to build on relationships, while increasing the value and frequency of each sale. Use every opportunity you can think of to touch base with people you’ve done business with or hope to. Send out newsletters that keep your business top-of-mind. Call or write when you know of something they’d be interested in. Send out surveys to learn more about what people need, and follow-up by tailoring your business to deliver what people really want.
Take time off. As tempting as it is to work around the clock, it’s imperative to take “mental health” breaks. All work and no play will burn you out, extinguishing the passion you had. Take days off. Relax and regroup. This gives your mind time to generate new ideas and fresh approaches. Take breaks during the day. Get out for lunch. A recent study found that getting a 30-minute walk or workout before a big presentation makes you smarter when it’s time to shine. So, you can imagine how beneficial some R&R in the Caribbean would be. You might even meet power brokers like Richard Branson, Bill Gates or Rachel Ray there!
