10 Books EVERY Internet Entrepreneur MUST Read!

The 4-Hour Work Week

You gotta love Timothy Ferris. I love his style and his approach to life. He makes it sound so easy that you almost want to kick yourself for not taking action sooner or even immediately. The key element in Tim’s book is AUTOMATION. This is where many business owners get it all wrong. They consciously or unconsciously make themselves prisoners of their own business.

In my philosophy, a business should be built around the family and not the other way around.

There are actually a lot of books on automation, outsourcing and developing business systems. Too many folks think that this is the first book to capture it all. It’s not, but that’s a different topic. I bring that up so you can do some intelligent research of your own. As a matter of fact, if you have never heard of Rich Schefren, then this is your opportunity to discover yet another “business systems” guy. He is commonly know as the “mentor” of the Internet millionaires. I personally own and refer often to his

Internet Business Manifesto. (BUY NOW)

In any event, Tim used a quote in his book by William Gibson:The future is here. It’s just not widely distributed yet.” I love that quote. When I saw that Tim used it… I felt the ‘click’ and a lot more happened in that book for me. There are lessons within lessons, and I like how they are buried, unless you’re really paying attention. The entire book is filled with amazing “A-ha” moments…it’s just crazy! My wife read it, and now we can’t stop talking about already implementing some of the concepts. For her, she simply loved the way Timothy covered time management. She told me that Tim gave a “positive” sense to time management. Time management has always been taught in her opinion as a tool to stop time wasting, but the way Timothy talked about creating time and freedom, gave her a whole new perspective on time management

Both books are currently available on Amazon for dirt cheap:

The Magic of Thinking Big. (David Schwartz).

Back in my network marketing days, THIS BOOK was the reference. Every distributor had one. We would quote excerpts of the book to each other as encouragement. I have read this book several times, but the first time I read this book was when I was in Amway. It felt like I was literally breaking down the walls of limitations that were surrounding me. It was a liberating experience. Being able to think without putting barriers and filters is something that is rarely done these days. Back in the day, after reading this book, I later went on to sponsor a highly paid medical doctor without even flinching. I presented “the plan” to him, and he signed on. At the time I was still attending university, and I know deep within me, that I would have never dared prospecting a medical doctor of his caliber.

This book and the power of positive thinking and several other factors contributed in leading me to start a clothing apparel business with one of my partners. The think that happened was that my thinking was suddenly MAGNIFIED to the umpteenth degree! Sure enough, I was already moving in that direction, but this book definitely ignited something in me!

The Magic of Thinking Big

Million Dollar Consulting(Alan Weiss).

If there is one thing that oozes out of the author of this book is CONFIDENCE!

If your business model is based on a service in way shape or form, then YOU MUST read this book. I’m having a hard time sitting down as I write this because this book is truly exciting to read. It is exciting because it is very practical. It’s almost as if you are ready to implement the things he says as you read them. I have always wondered how certain consultants can command tens of thousands of dollars per hour while others can barely charge $200-500/per hour. Well, see that’s the thing. To those of us looking on the outside, these “big guys” are charging by the hour. This is completely different from how these guys perceive the same service they are offering. They perceive their time and the value they bring rather than the hour they spend. Charging by the hour is synonym to a “paycheck mentality”, while selling on value is the very expression of entrepreneurship. Even though I currently do not own a consultancy business, it made me think about how I price my products or my time when coaching. In other words, what am I worth, and how much value can I provide?

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franlin.

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, Including Poor Richard’s Almanac, and Familiar Letters

Here are some of Benjamin Franklin’s quotes that I find thought provoking:

“He that is of the opinion money will do everything may well be suspected of doing everything for money.”

“He that waits upon fortune is never sure of a dinner.”

“Honesty is the best policy”

“Wealth is not his that has it, but his that enjoys it.”

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail”

“Do not squander time for that is the stuff life is made of.”

“Energy and persistence conquer all things.”

“It is the working man who is the happy man. It is the idle man who is the miserable man

This man is a witty and strong-willed character. Think of him as the Chuck Norris of the 1700′s. You just wouldn’t want to go up against this guy in a knife fight. What I like the best is that he took a LONG TERM view. He also LEVERAGED all of his opportunities. And, he wasn’t afraid of work. In fact, it is recorded that he had an impeccable work ethic. He is one of the guys that provoked me to think differently about a lot of things.

Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi)

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I wonder why I get so carried away by excellent sales letters by brilliant copywriters. These guys know how to turn my emotional switch on! By the time you are done reading their sales copy, you are so convinced about the product or service that you are frantically pulling out your credit card looking for the “buy now” button. I always wonder in what state of mind the copywriter was when writing the letter.

Well, this book explains the psychological mechanism behind all of this. It allows you to discover your “hot buttons”.  If you don’t understand your own Flow then you cannot develop the lifestyle you want, at least not as easily. This is not a step-by-step book on how to get into “the zone”, but it gives you a solid understanding of the processes that are needed to get there. I really got the sense that some of these concepts have been around for quite some time, and have thoroughly undergone the tests of research.

Dune, 40th Anniversary Edition (Dune Chronicles, Book 1) - Frank Herbert

Frank Herbert is no stranger. He is a well renowned science-fiction author. The key principle that jumps out of this book is that, extremely difficult conditions are the breeding ground for great things and heroic acts. Also, I see ALL BOOKS as business books. Big lesson there! Life in itself, if perceived correctly is full of incredibly rich lessons.

The suspense, the readability and ABUNDANCE of principles is simply mind-blowing!    If you loved Lord of the Rings, then you will absolutely love DUNE! This is an amazing classic! It has got to be one of the most famous science-fiction books ever written. By the time you are done with this book, you will be burning with inspiration! You will want to break through every limitation that has held you back up until now. You will kill the fear that ruthlessly governs your mind!

The Goal (Eliyahu M. Goldratt). Dependent events. Statistical flux. Balanced demand. What’s not to love here? Seriously, if you want to… increase profits while simultaneously reducing your stress and fatigue, this is a winner. It’s a book about production and operations in factories, but if you view it like a true internet entrepreneur, you’ll be able to extract pure gold. Very interesting concept… this theory of constraints. It will completely change your perception!

Made to Stick. As an internet Intrepreneur, you should be in the business
of selling your personality and the value that your business or service offers. You want your customers to have your name, picture, voice STUCK in their mind. It should become impossible to stop thinking about YOU. You want them to ask: “Who is this guy!?” and the lessons from that book are essential to any Internet Entrepreneur no matter what stage you are at.

This book will teach you to simplify even further your business idea, or even your USP. It takes the “elevator pitch” concept to a whole new level. What is it that your product or service REALLY does?? You need to strip your idea to its simplest level. Your concept should pass the KISS(Keep It Stupid Simple) test!

I love the part where they talk about learning to connect with your customer on a very relational level. Three things really stood out to me.

  1. The need to establish unshakable credibility – This is not about getting rich or making a quick buck. You need to provide a value in your product or service that clearly over delivers. If people don’t trust you, they will challenge every word that comes of your mouth…it doesn’t matter how sincere you are.
  2. The importance of connecting with your customers emotionally – Many say that information makes people think but emotion makes people act. In psychology we learn that emotional needs rank very high on Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs. Some unscrupulous people have used this to manipulate and harm others, but knowing this does not make you bad. It simply gives you a greater sense of responsibility when dealing with your customers.
  3. The power of stories – People LOVE reading books and watching movies, and they feel less inclined to “work” to understand. It is in this frame of mind that people tend to lower their guard and pay close attention and connect more with you.

The book is filled with real and practical examples that help you extract the same principles from the different scenarios.

The E-Myth Revisited. If you pretend that your business will be replicated 1,000 times, and you’re the next McDonald’s, then you will design things right from the start. This yields an incredible efficiency, but also peace of mind that other people can run your business while you are not around. See my notes in a previous comment about LIFESTYLE DESIGN.

If I have to resume the underlying concept of this book, it would be that “You don’t work for your business, it works for you!”

Most people who talk about getting into business talk about “Wanting to be their own bosses”. There is something that seriously bothers me with that concept…it is the word “boss”. I don’t know about other people, but for me, getting into business is not about being a boss, it is about being “free” from being a boss. “Being my own Boss” to me implies, chasing people down, working 16-hour days and taking little to no vacation. No…that is not my idea of starting my own business. In fact, in this case, having a “nice boss” in a regular well paid job becomes suddenly very appealing. Personally, working my business till I drop is a free ticket to burnout and high blood pressure…no thanks!

Bottom line? Turn your business into a system. Once you do this, you will find out that you are capable of creating several other businesses that can all run as different systems. This is where you enter into a whole new dimension in business. You will have several businesses (multiple streams of income), you will be making an 8-figure income, and most importantly…..you will have a lifestyle of FREEDOM!

“If you want to reach a goal, you must “see the reaching” in your own mind before you actually arrive at your goal.”

“Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to cut all sources of retreat. Only by doing so can one be sure of maintaining that state of mind known as a burning desire to win – essential to success.”
